Religious hate seen as motive in killing : Fremont slaying: Muslim leaders and relatives of Afghan American mother shot at point-blank range say only motive they can imagine for anyone wanting her dead was the garment of her faith, her head scarf "Local Muslim leaders on Friday denounced as a likely hate crime the brazen daylight shooting death in Fremont of a mother of six, and police said that they had arrested a parolee described as a 'person of interest' in connection with the slaying.
Killed Thursday by a single bullet to the head as she walked with her 3-year-old daughter on a well-to-do residential street, she was distinguished by a hijab, the head scarf worn by some devout Muslim women. The Afghan immigrant had no purse or money on her, family members said.
Stunned relatives and Muslim leaders said the only motive they could see, outside of insanity, would be hatred. "

Governments say they follow U.S. on jail treatment: "UNITED NATIONS, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Some countries try to refute criticism over their treatment of prisoners by saying they are only following the U.S. example on handling terror suspects, a U.N. human rights expert said on Monday.
Manfred Nowak, the U.N. investigator on torture, told a news conference that 'all too frequently' governments respond to criticism about their jails by saying they handled detainees the same way the United States did.
'The United States has been the pioneer of human rights and is a country that has a high reputation in the world,' Nowak said. 'Today, other governments are kind of saying, 'But why are you criticizing us, we are not doing something different than what the United States is doing.''
He said nations like Jordan tell him, 'We are collaborating with the United States so it can't be wrong if it is also done by the United States.'"

Bill Maher: New Rule: We Don't Need Drug Tests for Librarians The Huffington Post: {snip}"The last time a librarian did something really stupid and reckless on drugs was when Laura married George.
Last year, Florida's Levy County introduced drug testing for library volunteers. Whose average age is between 60 and 85. The volunteers were required to drive to another city - Gainesville - and urinate in a cup 'within hearing distance' of a laboratory monitor. That'll teach 'em for offering to work for free. 'Okay, grandma, now get pissing. And I'd better hear a nice even unbroken stream.'
And then something weird happened. Inexplicably, the number of volunteers dropped from 55 to two. It's almost like they didn't enjoy being degraded. And they call themselves the greatest generation. "
